Thanksgiving Blues 2015 (Episode 1547)

This week brings us the semi-annual Thanksgiving edition of the program, featuring a mouth-watering selection of songs in all flavors of the Blues. It’s an impressive spread of food themed tracks for your holiday season soundtrack, with all but two of the songs coming off 2015 releases – an impressive feat for a themed episode.

We were fortunate to even have a featured selection from “Johnny’s Mailbox” that fits right in with the Thanksgiving topic. “Mama’s Cookin'” comes off the new album by Brad Vickers & His Vestapolitans. The new CD, That’s What They Say, is available now from ManHatTone, and it includes 15 songs. You’ll find guests on this disc like Gina Sicilia, Mike Welch, and Dave Gross. As always, Brad Vickers and company create original music and play covers that keep the American Roots music traditions of the past alive.

“Mama’s Cookin'” is a tribute to mothers everywhere who strive to keep our bellies full. It was written by the Vestapolitans’ Margey Peters, and she also takes lead vocals on the tune. Other than the opening cover of Tampa Red’s “Seminole Blues” and the traditional song “Don’t You Love Your Daddy No More,” all of the songs on the record are original compositions. You can learn more about Brad Vickers & His Vestapolitans, That’s What They Say, and the tour schedule online at

In addition to the music, I found a fascinating short film about the history of poke sallet, or polk salad. This video is courtesy of the Southern Foodways Alliance and Joe York. Enjoy the video, and consider making this southern favorite a part of your spread.

Merry Christmas from Full-Time Blues Radio! Our annual tradition of bringing you the latest crop of Christmas Blues continues with original songs for the season, new versions of Christmas classics, and legendary reissues from Concord Music Group. In addition to providing the Rufus Thomas track, “I’ll Be Your Santa Baby,” Concord has remastered Ray Charles’ classic 1985 album The Spirit Of Christmas, and you’ll hear the track that is synonymous with a famous scene in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

There’s a new track from Treasa Levasseur to get you primed for her full-length Christmas album in 2015, a new release from Larry Carlton, and a featured selection to close out the program off an album sure to become a classic.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

One of our most popular episodes each year, the 2013 Christmas edition of Full-Time Blues Radio keeps the tradition alive with some amazing new & independent Blues music all fitting the holiday theme. There is a fantastic selection of original Christmas songs, alongside new versions of some of the classics! Pour some egg nog, pitch another log on the fireplace, and turn up this fantastic selection of tunes.

Since none of these songs have been played on the program before, I decided to give “Johnny’s Mailbox” the week off. Instead, we paid special tribute to Chick Willis. “The Stoop Down Man” passed away December 7, 2013 after a decades long career. The song, “Chick 4 Christmas,” is a 2012 medley of several Chick Willis Christmas tunes that appear on the Ichiban Records compilation Ichiban Blues At Christmas Vol. 2.

I hope you have enjoyed this year of Full-Time Blues Radio programs. It has been our most successful year, to date; and that is solely because of the folks listening and interacting with the program through social media. Word of mouth is the greatest advertising, and each time you share the show, it means more to me than you can imagine. I pray you have a blessed Christmas, happy holidays, and an amazing new year. This will be our last episode for 2013, so I look forward to meeting you right back here in 2014. Thanks, and God Bless.

This is the second time in three years I’ve been able to put together an impressive spread featuring Blues tunes built around the Thanksgiving theme. It’s easy when you remember that all you need are great songs about food, family, and gratitude. So, fix yourself a plate, pull up a chair, and enjoy an hour of music that definitely won’t make you sleepy after you’ve enjoyed it!

This week’s featured selection from inside “Johnny’s Mailbox” is the title song from Freddie Vanderford’s album Greasy Greens. The album was originally released in 2010, but it happened to arrive on our doorstep this week – just in time for this week’s cornucopia of Thanksgiving tunes.

Freddie Vanderford is keeping the traditions of the Piedmont style of Blues alive. He sat at the foot of the learning tree with Peg Leg Sam Jackson, and has established himself as a wildly talented multi-instrumentalist and singer. He is especially skilled on the harmonica. He released Greasy Greens in 2010, as mentioned above, on Circle X Records. Click Here for Freddie Vanderford’s ReverbNation Profile
